Plot Summary:
Chapter Twenty begins - with Gaston traveling to Belgium to finish up his business plans. After he leaves, he finds out about his wife having an affair, and he is never to return again. In Macondo, the love affair with Aureliano (II) and Amaranta Úrsula still continues on. The Buendía house completely changes and falls out, destroying the couple's lovemaking, and big, red ants come at it in every direction. The main provider, Ursula, continually thinks about the dangers of all the incest and the naming of the children. While being very concerned about this, a son is born with a pig's tail. During child birth, Amaranta Úrsula bleeds to death. Aureliano (II) is very sad and looks to Nigromanta for comfort. However, he drinks a lot and ends up forgetting about the newborn baby. The baby dies, and the father finds it laying around. Ants are on it, eating the corpse. Now the family line is coming to an end. Then he leaves and finds a Buendia family history. He finds that text is about his life. Then the town is riped from the ground and it is erased from total memory.(Boo ending)

Quotes:
Quote One- " Then don't wear yourself out searching," the priest exclaimed with the final conviction. "Many years ago there used to be a street here with that name and in those days people had the custom of naming their children after streets"(pg. 409).
- - You should not go to far from where you are to find something. That is completely un- necessary to do. If you just look right in front of yourself, maybe then you will find what you need and what you have been looking for.

Quote Two- " Friends are a bunch of bastards!"(pg. 413).
- - Sometimes you get so sick of your friends or close people to you, you just want to be alone, and all they are too you are a bunch of people getting in your way. (I do not understand that though.. i love my friends!)

Themes:

Tragedy- is the main theme during this chapter. Tragedy comes about when Aureliano meets the love of his life, and when his baby dies. When the death occurs, the whole demeanor of his personality changes. The love and life turns to grief and loneliness. Tragedy is the fate that Aureliano meets when his love and baby both die. He is left to his grief and loneliness, to think about it alone for the rest of his life.

Magical Realism:

The trembling of the bones in the grave represents the magical realism in this chapter. Of course bones can not do this by themselves, so there was some sort of magic used to get them moving in this way.

Character Development:

Aureliano II- is born during this chapter and also dies before the end of the chapter.
Ursula- dies while giving birth. She was hemorrhaging during it.
