Plot Summary:
Chapter Twelve - begins with modern technology that came into the town because of the railroad that was built. One problem may occur though, a capitalist family moved in and begin their way of life fenced in next to the village. These people force their own legal system on the village, and they try to control most of what happens. But most of the colonels and people will not allow this. A war begins from this and sends people to depression. Macondo really begins to change at this point. Movies, imports and new items enter into town. From the original villagers point of view, it is chaos, but the change can not be controlled. Aureliano is thrilled by this, but only one other woman stays in this thrill with him. It is Remedios, she loves change because it brings in more men which may fall for her. She actually stays away from the men then completely disappears in the blue.

Quotes:
Quote One- "We have to prepare everything," she insisted, "because we never know what these strangers like to eat"(pg. 229).
- - When other people are coming in, we have to watch what we do because we need to know what they want along with what we want to. But to please them, because they are guest, we have to over prepare she is saying, to make them comfortable.

Quote Two- "We're going to have to raffle you off," she would tell her, "perplexed at the fact that men's words would not penetrate her"(pg. 235).
- - To get rid of her, we might just have to raffle her off for free, even though that is a bad thing, it may just have to be done.

Theme:
Change is the main theme of this chapter. As the town gets the railroad, more people come in and out from the modern world. So when a family moves in and starts up a banana farm, they think that they own everything. They try to control the land and everything. The older villagers mind this because they do not like the power shift.

Magical Realism:
Ascending into heaven is the magical realism. Referring to the Bible, like Mary, the magical aspect of this story makes a point that to ascend you have to be a "saint" or have some sort of different power then the surrounding people.

Character Development:
Meme- ascends into heaven.
The village as a whole begins to change. With the new developments, people have to adjust their ways.
