Plot Summary:
Chapter Twelve - begins with modern technology that came into the town because of the railroad that was built. One problem may occur though, a capitalist family moved in and begin their way of life fenced in next to the village. These people force their own legal system on the village, and they try to control most of what happens. But most of the colonels and people will not allow this. A war begins from this and sends people to depression. Macondo really begins to change at this point. Movies, imports and new items enter into town. From the original villagers point of view, it is chaos, but the change can not be controlled. Aureliano is thrilled by this, but only one other woman stays in this thrill with him. It is Remedios, she loves change because it brings in more men which may fall for her. She actually stays away from the men then completely disappears in the blue.

Quote Two- "We're going to have to raffle you off," she would tell her, "perplexed at the fact that men's words would not penetrate her"(pg. 235).
- - To get rid of her, we might just have to raffle her off for free, even though that is a bad thing, it may just have to be done.
Theme:
Change is the main theme of this chapter. As the town gets the railroad, more people come in and out from the modern world. So when a family moves in and starts up a banana farm, they think that they own everything. They try to control the land and everything. The older villagers mind this because they do not like the power shift.
Magical Realism:
Ascending into heaven is the magical realism. Referring to the Bible, like Mary, the magical aspect of this story makes a point that to ascend you have to be a "saint" or have some sort of different power then the surrounding people.
Character Development:
Meme- ascends into heaven.
The village as a whole begins to change. With the new developments, people have to adjust their ways.

Then when she tries to leave Ursulas' house to go home, Aureliano Segundo goes out there to find her house and marry her.
Quotes:
Quote One - " It's better that way," she approved. "Let's hope that he becomes a priest so that God will finally come into this house"(pg. 185).
Quote Two - "No one would be better able than she to shape the vituous man who would restore the prestige of the family, a man who would never have heard talk of war, fighting cocks, bad women, or wild undertakings, four calamities that, according to what Ursula thought, had determined the downfall of their line. "This one will be a priest," she promised solemnly. "And if God gives me life he'll be Pope someday." They all laughed when they heard her, not only in the bedroom but all thorugh the house, where Aureliano Segundo's rowdy friends were gathered. The war, relegated to the attic of bad memories, was momentarily recalled with the popping of champagne bottles. " To the health of the Pope," Aureliano Segundo toasted(pg. 188-189).
Theme:
The main theme of this chapter is change. Without change, the development of the characters do not happen. Also, because of all the deaths and problems within the family, all the people are starting to change into their own person. So without the change, no new development would occur.
Magical Realism:
The magical element in chapter ten is being able to see ghost. Aureliano Segundo is able to see a ghost of Melquides. Not only was he able to see them, he could also talk to the ghost that he saw. The main thing that they talked about was the predictions that he wrote down many years ago. By being about to converse this, it also proved being able to see into the future. By being able to write these down and many years later talking about them proves another magical element. Not only being able to converse, when Aureliano Segundo was growing up he was sleeping with Petra Cotes, who said that the animals were multiplying to fast. They were doing this because of some magic that came from his sleeping with her. It was also kind of weird that Ramedio would just be able to put men in a "phase" and have them forever in love with him.
Charater Development:
The twins- change the most. The begin their lives for themself. The pretty much start over and challenge themself in ways of becoming opposite from others and eachother. They then begin to go separate ways in their paths.

Plot Summary:
In chapter nine -Aureliano completely changes his mentality. He becomes more secluded and could care less for what he was fighting for his entire time. The war and mainly for himself.@! Colonel Marquez wants to be with Amaranta. He feels that they are meant for eachother. However, no matter what he keeps telling, it will not happen. But when Aureliano and Marquez leave to war, Aureliano tries to kill himself. Even though he does not get accomplished what he meant to, life has a new meaning. He is completely dead to himself so whatever he does or what people say, he is over with.
Quotes:
Quote one - "It's a contradiction," he said. " If these changes are good, it means that the Conservative regime is good. If we succeed in broadening the popular base of the war with them, as you people say, it means that the regime has a broad popular base. It means, in short, that for almost twenty years we've been fighting against the sentiments of the nation"(pg. 168).
Quote Two - "Nothing of the sort," the colonel said. " They're things that a person writes to himself." . . . "In that case," she said, " you burn them colonel"(pg. 174).
Theme:
The main theme is Solitude. Amaranta is giving off the impression that she is ready to die unhappy and alone. Also she continually refuses the proposals in which the men give to her. She is not ready for marriage and is not yet in love with any those men. However, she is absolutely crazy because she is alone.
Magical Realism:
Many magical elements are used through out this chapter. One major example is the bullet. When this bullet missed all the organs that Colonel Aureliano actually tried to hit, one can see that there is an unrealism here. Colonel Aureliano tried to kill himself, but couldn't. The doctor did not try to help either because he figured if someone would try to kill themself, it would happen. But even though the doctor thought he would kill himself in the heart, he saw into the future. Seeing into the future is a "power". That represents the magical aspect.
Charater Development:
Colonel Buendia-goes through a hell of a lot at this time. Fighting is a major theme in his life becuase of his family. From this fighting, all he is getting is negative input from his surroundings. Because of the neagtive input, he feels everything that is going wrong has a reason behind it and he could relaly care less about anything anymore.
Amaranta- changes because he goes from caring to not even wanting to see Marquez anymore. He can not stand that guy!

Plot Summary:
Chapter Five- Begins with Aureliano and Remedios finally get married. She loves her house and could not fit in so well anywhere else. She tells everyone that she will be having a baby soon and can not wait. Amaranta and Rebeca get over their problems for her and even stop fighting to make clothes for the new one coming. Remedios then dies which is really sad. Then Rebeca and Pierto's marriage is then put on hold for all the new plans in life that occur. While she puts it on hold, she falls in love with her brother Jose the son, and marries him(which is kind of weird). The "second round" Amaranta and Pierto become engaged. Aureliano tells his mom that Amaranta’s marriage should be put on hold because that is kind of soon to decide something like marriage. Maybe it is not worth it because you might be just depressed. During this period Jose the father in law urges him to remarry. The most important thing is that Aureliano then becomes involved in the war, and leads the revolution and becomes Colonel Aureliano.
Quotes:
Quote 1- "Because I'm crazy"(pg. 83).
Quote 2 - "If you really like the family, there's Amaranta for you"(pg. 93).
Themes:
Theme 1- Love (again)- This theme is still displayed in many different ways. The major one is by how the "siblings" are together and stay really close to one another. Also by how people get matched up out of no where. It is showing us that love is not as important as what people believe it is.
Magical Realism:
Madness- (mentally) is a HUGE part of the magical realism aspect in this chapter. The one that suffers the most from it is Jose Arcadio Buendia the father. He goes completely crazy. He still tied to the tree as was in the past couple chapters. He can’t even communicate in his language anymore. The only thing he can speak is Latin, and lost memory of his family to that of his own identity as well.
Character Development:
Rebeca- is someone that is respectable and in love and turns into a weirdo with the incest with her brother.
Jose-who happnes to be the father changes to a man who is completely lost within himself. He is no longer the man he used to be.
